Biography

“Dunton’s fusion of classical and modern popular music results in a truly captivating, unique sound. His distinct songwriting and arrangements combine the atmosphere of Vaughan Williams and Rachmaninov with the melodic sensibilities found in composers such as Bacharach and Lennon/McCartney”
Sara Parker – BBC Radio

“So, what is musicality? It’s achieving a solid equilibrium between the importance of lyricism, catchy tunes and the passion driving both. Paul Dunton has that in spades.”

Paul Dunton
Paul’s music is best described as an atmospheric fusion of alternative & pop with a unique classical twist! He composes and performs both instrumental pieces and songs. With influences such as modern day artists; Elbow, Rufus Wainwright, Zero 7, Pink Floyd, Turin Brakes and drawing inspiration from composers such as Einaudi, John Barry and Samuel Barber; singer-songwriter Paul Dunton offers something different. With national reviews hailing the breath taking live sound and sheer originality and atmosphere of his works, The Tunbridge Wells based performer has firmly made his mark on the musical landscape. Paul cites his fellow band members as a key reason for his growing success. “Technically, I am a songwriter with a band, however it’s really not like that, we are a very close, united team. I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by a group of incredible musicians, who are also great friends of mine. I owe so much to them”. Paul’s string & flute arrangements are often composed by Miriam Evans, Jenny Maslin, Paul himself, Becky Andrew and Hazel Ross. Paul’s Ensemble and Orchestra are regularly performing both nationally and internationally with encouraging success and were recently featured on BBC Radio 2 by Joan Armatrading with a selection of interviews and airplay of Paul’s song ‘Don’t Forget’.

Drawing on a decade of rich musical experience, Paul is one of those rare talents equally at home on stage or in the recording studio. Original and captivating melodies are effortlessly supported by expertly crafted classical arrangements that reveal a songwriter very much at ease with the power of music to communicate. For smaller intimate shows Paul (piano/vocals) performs with alongside his ‘Ensemble’ the ethereal live sound features cello, violins, guitar, bass and flute and Paul will often be joined by one of his regular female vocalists; Charlotte Andrew, Jenny Maslin & Poppy Alice

Paul’s larger ensemble known as ‘The Paul Dunton Orchestra’, comprises a line up of up to 8 violins & 4 Cellos along with guitar, flute, bass and percussion and 2-3 of the above mentioned vocalists. Paul continues to actively perform both internationally and throughout the UK at numerous festivals and prominent London venues including The Union Chapel in Islington, The British Design Museum and Hampton Court Palace.

2011 saw the Orchestra spread their wings abroad following an invitation from The Mayor of Wiesbaden (Germany) to perform at the ‘Theatrium Wilhelmstraßenfest’, one of Europe’s largest festivals. Following their performance, Paul and The Orchestra returned to Wiesbaden in June of 2012 to sucessfully headline the main stages at the event.

In the autumn of the same year, The Paul Dunton Ensemble completed an incredible maiden tour of the USA, performing in historical theatres and renowned venues in 8 different states across the eastern region and mid-west, culminating in a spectacular roof top performance on top of The New York Strand Hotel, which lies adjacent to the Empire State building. The tour was incredibly successful and enabled Paul to build a organic and thriving fan base across the pond. The ensemble plan to return to the states in 2013. A few months ago, Paul recently supported JOAN ARMATRADING at Aylesbury theatre as part of her high profile UK tour. Paul says” I was truly honoured to be asked to support one the UK finest ever singer-songwriters, It was an incredible experience and a real privilege.”

Recent CD releases ‘Escapism’ and ‘The Sirens EP’ are available for download at Itunes, Amazon and all good online retailers, with physical copies available at all live performances and through his website. A new EP and single release is planned for this summer.

Paul’s growing success has not taken away from his own personal passion – local & live music. This commitment to live music led to Paul being the first ever contemporary artist to be offered a weekly residency at the historical ‘Grey Lady Music Lounge’ in Tunbridge Wells. Resisting the highly competitive nature of the music world, Paul took the unusual step to grow this into a showcase for original local music and over a 8 year period ‘An Evening with Paul Dunton & Guests’ has become recognised as one of the most popular and professionally run original acoustic shows in the South East. His regular shows at The Grey Lady and the town’s 300 seater Trinity Theatre continue to consistently sell out as do his regular shows at Pizzaexpress’s, Music Room (Maidstone) and The Pheasantry, situated along London’s Kings Road, Chelsea. Building on this success, Paul founded ‘Local & Live’, a ground-breaking free 4 day festival of original music featuring 100 of the 320 local artists that now regularly play at his PD & Guests showcases. Held annually over the late August bank holiday weekend on The Pantiles Bandstand, the event regularly attracts audiences in excess of 20,000 year upon year. It is now regarded as a cornerstone of the Kent & Sussex musical calendar. More details at www.localandlive.org
